We answer the Brief:

Firstly and most importantly, Art in Architecture answers a brief.  In doing so, the design, materials and methods used in our designs vary greatly between commissions – unlike most artists who will favour a particular discipline.  The brief dictates the correct design approach to be taken thus ensuring the best results.  Therefore, our commissioned works look quite different one from the other – though all designed by Jenny Steiner.  The approach and design philosophy, quality of execution of the work and ability to deliver are the constant, not a formulaic style e.g. not all cast bronze pieces or solely metal fabrication

Budgets and timelines:

The budget and the deadline for installation are an integral part of the brief as they will impact on the choice of materials and complexity of the design.

Ability to tell a story:

Each project is researched and the design developed through the findings of the research.  This is evident in the projects shown as examples.  Normally, elements of history, memory and significance are drawn from discussions with key personnel and utilised to create a narrative within each commission.  This information is used to create the overall concept design or theme.  In the context of the underlying theme, these findings could also direct the use of materials, shape, size and format of each sculptural piece within the family of works.

Each work undertaken by Art in Architecture is constructed with elements of meaning as opposed to simply decorative features – the narrative is paramount.  Jenny Steiner’s works are by and large conceptual contemporary designs. As you would expect on first glance, the narrative may not be obvious but each aspect is justified in the rationale upon which the design has been achieved.  The public may judge the work solely on face value and as a subjective evaluation either like it or not, purely on their perceived aesthetic value. However when they ask ‘what does it mean’ there is always a comprehensive answer.  For this reason, it is always our recommendation for our works to be accompanied by an interpretive panel in both commemoration, explanation and celebration of the work.

Research and development of the rationale and concept design in most cases is carried out by Jenny Steiner with the assistance of the client.  Jenny then either introduces other artists or proceeds directly to a design and industrial fabrication using tried and tested professionals accustomed to working closely with artists.
